Panama’s Tourism Authority took a bold move in its new campaign “Panama is not for Tourists” and I love it! It reminds me a bit of their last campaign that I liked “The Path Less Traveled” in 2007.
Here is a video of Bocas del Toro for their new campaign:
And here is a video (poor quality, but it is what I could find online) of their old campaign:
See the similarities? They both promote a place where massive tourism has not reached. This is one of my favorite things about Panama, to be able to have your own private beach without it actually being private. There is simply no one there.
Visiting Bocas del Toro Panama is apparently for trendsetters, not tourists. While visiting the highlands is for birders, not tourists. The quetzales trail featured in the video crosses from Boquete to Volcan.
I did this trail this year and it was an amazing experience. It was challenging but not impossible, you have to be in good conditions, but not necessarily an experience hiker. Panama is considered a birdwatching paradise with 992 different species.
So if you are a traveler that doesn’t like crowds and massive tourism, come visit Panama. If you are a tourist you can always go to Costa Rica.
